Discovering What You Want

Make a “List of Four” (Click "List of Four" to download the single worksheet. Click here to download the Worksheet Section):

  1. Needs
  2. Wants
  3. Wishes
  4. Dislikes

Go for a drive. Take pictures of homes you like and jot down notes as to what it is about that particular home that catches your attention.

Go to open houses and attend the Madison Area Builders Association Parade of Homes, the Parade of Condominiums, and other home tours. Look at architecture, colors, special features, room sizes, window and door placements, plumbing fixtures, cabinetry and more. Use this for your “List of Four”.

Look through house plan books and magazines available on newsstands, at bookstores and at your local library. Go online—the Internet is a great resource.

Create your own home portfolio. Include your “list of four,” photographs, and notes you’ve taken. Add magazine clippings, include exteriors of homes, floor plans, colors, furniture, landscaping, appliances, fixtures, floor coverings, furniture, windows and more.

Sketch it out. Draw a rough layout or a more detailed plan using graph paper. The more preparation you do beforehand, the easier the process is for both you and the people trying to understand what you want.
