Hiring a Contractor
Before you hire a contractor, ask for: proof of current state
license and the license number, proof of liability insurance,
proof of worker’s compensation insurance, a list of customer
references for similar jobs, a written proposal outlining the
work in detail, amount to be charged, and terms of warranty
or guarantee.
A professional contractor will have a permanent place of business, a tax ID number, and a phone number. If the contractor is hesitant to supply any of the above things, cross him off your list. Check all references. Call the Better Business Bureau, the Chamber of Commerce, NARI or MABA to check on complaints, reliability, quality, and reputation. Confirm that your contractor is not involved in any litigation.
